About Go

Go is the ancient game of surrounding: two players take turns placing black and white stones, capture groups that run out of room, and try to wall off more of the board. This version keeps it calm and clean. Play five robot levels, from one that is still learning to one that thinks for a few seconds, take turns with a friend on the same screen, or create an invite link and play a friend online from anywhere. Choose a quick 9×9, a 13×13 or the full 19×19 board. Counting is done for you at the end: the game guesses which stones are dead, you tap to fix anything, and it scores the board with area scoring and 7.5 komi. Your game against the robot saves itself, and the game speaks all twelve languages of the site.

How to play

  1. Pick an opponentPlay a robot on one of five levels, a friend on the same screen, or a friend online with an invite link.
  2. Place stonesBlack goes first. Tap an empty point to place a stone. On a phone, the big boards ask for a second tap to be sure.
  3. CaptureA group with no empty points next to it is taken off the board. You can’t retake a single stone straight back (ko).
  4. CountWhen nothing useful is left, both players pass. Tap any dead groups, then accept the count. Stones plus surrounded points win.

Tips from the usta

  • Corners first, then sides, then the centre. It takes fewer stones to surround points in a corner.
  • A group needs two separate eyes to live for good. Leave room for them early.
  • When a stone is in atari (one empty point left), save it only if running gives it more room.
  • New to Go? Start on 9×9 against Beginner. Games are short and every lesson shows quickly.
